Nikola helped saved the NBA for a lot of fans. I hardly ever gave the NBA two or three thoughts a year prior to the last couple years because it seemed like it was always the same 5 or 6 teams in the championship and less than a quarter of NBA teams had a serious chance. Any league were a few superstars can get together and decide to all join up on the same team to win a championship -- and it ACTUALLY works -- was a joke to me. The team play that the Nuggets are bringing back are making the games very watchable.

It’s because guys like Jokic, Luka destroy the “bigger, stronger, faster” narrative the current NBA likes to put forward. They wanna pretend this is the greatest era of NBA athletically. But when two of the most un-athletic guys are 2 of the top 3 players in the NBA this year…it kills that narrative…and they can’t stand it. It also shows what skilled past players from the 80’s and 90’s would do in this NBA. Which, again, kills the narrative.

I don't remember who I heard saying this (I think it was Jason Tatum during a mic'd up game) "you are only as good as your last game" and that stuck with me since. You can be the absolute best, but have a single slow night, and suddenly, your legacy is irrelevant, and you deserve to be traded. Same things happened with the nuggets after game 2. They had a really bad night and everyone counted them out, overrated, cooked, Jokic was too fat and unathletic and didn't deserve the MVP. But now that they reminded everyone why they're the current defending champs, the narrative shifted again.
